Recommended Reading - "What Got You Here Won't Get You There" by Marshall Goldsmith
This is a book that looks at how successful leaders become even more successful. What’s more, not only is it a great read that lays out the twenty habits that hold leaders back from supremacy, but I defy anyone to say that they don’t recognise at least one of the habits in themselves. Let’s look at a few examples:
Have you ever felt the need to win at all costs and in all situations? Do you find yourself passing judgement on other people? Have you ever withheld praise and reward when it was clearly due? Or can you recall a time when you were not really listening to others?
These are just a few of the habits discussed by Goldsmith whose philosophy is one of continuous improvement,
The basis of his book is in fact that we should never rest on our laurels in terms of sharpening our leadership tools, monitoring our behaviour and developing our thinking. Indeed he gives lots of great practical tips on how to change our thinking and behaviour for the better. Whether it be asking for feedback in the right way, learning how to apologise sincerely when you get it wrong, promoting yourself and becoming your own press officer or thanking others consistently, these simple but powerful suggestions are sure to make a considerable difference to your personal impact as an outstanding leader!
